| Moses Ssekibogo, stage name Mowzey Radio, died on Thursday morning, 1st Feb, 2018. |
No words can ever be used to describe the amount of grief that has befallen the Ugandan music industry after the death of one of the most gifted artists Uganda, and East Africa has ever had, in the person of Mowzey Radio. Mowzey Radio, and his long time friend Weasel, formed Radio and Weasel of the Goodlyfe Crew, the East African dynamic duo, one of the best musical groups in the region.
Since 2007, they have graced our TVs, Radios, newspapers and online publications with music so good, even their enemies would listen and appreciate the ingenuity involved. Yes, they had enemies early on in their careers because they fought with almost everyone in the media, radio DJs, club DJs, radio/TV station managers, club owners, journalists, fellow musicians, to mention but a few.
Over the years, they mended their relationship with almost everyone they had ever had a brawl with, and at the time of Radio’s untimely death, they were at peace with almost everyone. This is evidenced by how many people visited him while he was admitted in hospital, and the whooping numbers that attended his vigil, church service, farewell celebration at Kololo airstrip last night, and funeral today.
Mowzey Radio was a rare talent in Uganda. He was immensely talented, gifted with a voice too serene and pleasant to listen to, with astounding songwriting skills, as he wrote way too many songs for others. His voice was one of a kind. He was very generous with his talent. Radio and Weasel collaborated with almost everyone; Wizkid, Dr Jose Chameleone, Juliana, PJ the legendary Powers, Cindy, Lillian Mbabazi, Mun*G, GNL Zamba, Kalifa Aganaga, Spice Diana, Ziza Bafana, Toniks, Red Banton, General Ozzy, Vanessa Mdee, Armani, Benon and Vampos, DJ Pius, Maro, Ceaser DikTionary, Diamond Oscar, Shanks Vividee, Rabadaba, Aziz Azion, Gasuza, Pallaso, Desirre Luzinda, Irene Ntale, OS Suna, etc. He was just too generous, and he encouraged us to share too in Plenty plenty.
He sang songs for all occasions. Heartbroken? Listen to Lwaki onumya, Nyambura. Are you in love? Listen to Tell daddy (I love you), Where you are, Nkwagala, Leesu, among the very many others. Looking for inspiration? Listen to Ability, Ngenda maaso. Disappointed? Listen to Ekyama, if you are a bee, he sang Pollination for you. If you are broke or rich, listen to Sex money, he sang about his enemies in Crucify me, he sang about people who do not want to pay what they owe to others in Ba customer. For all the thirsty people, he sang Juicy juicy for them, and we did not have to walk on dark streets because he lit them up with Streetlights.
He was so talented he made Bread and butter sound romantic, and said a woman was sweeter than Kuku (chicken). That really took my Breath away.Truthfully, for people between 22 – 28 years old right now, it is safe to say that we grew up in the Mowzey Radio era. In the past 10 years or so, he has had a very big influence on the kind of music we listen to locally, if it was not his hit-songs we were dancing to or serenading women to, it was the songs he wrote for others.
There is just too much to say about him, and I am writing this while listening to his music, in utmost grief. Please visit their YouTube channel and see for yourself, what a genius Mowzey Radio was. He has gone to sing for and with the angels in heaven now. Let us keep Weasel, the other half of Radio and Weasel in our prayers. He surely needs them.
Rest in peace Moses Ssekiwogo, aka Mowzey Radio. We will forever miss you, but we'll also listen to your music neera, neera, neera.
