The international break is still ongoing this week but the qualifying matches that have been played so far give us a picture of what countries are in pole position to make it to the European Championship in 2024 in Germany.
Cristiano Ronaldo scored two braces in two
matches to help Portugal record two wins in two matches against Liechtenstein
and Luxemburg in Group J. The 38-year-old keeps showing why he is one of the greatest
footballers ever as he keeps performing at the highest stage and breaking
records at an age when most of his mates have retired. Portugal now have six
points with 10 goals
England also recorded two victories home
and away, overcoming Italy on Thursday and Ukraine on Sunday evening with 2-1
and 2-0 scorelines respectively. Harry Kane scored in both matches to cement
his position as the greatest goal scorer for England while Bukayo Saka
continued to show why he is called the “Star boy”. England top their Group C
with defending champions Italy in second after recovering from the England loss
to beat Malta 2-0.
2020 semi-finalists Denmark were stunned by
lowly-ranked Kazakhstan when they come back from two goals behind to score
three goals in the final 17 minutes to steal the victory from the Danes.
Denmark find themselves in second behind Slovenia in Group H who won both their
games against San Marino and Kazakhstan.
The biggest result of the weekend was
Iceland’s 7-0 thumping of Liechtenstein at Rheinpark Stadion with Aron Gunnarsson
hitting a hat-trick in just 35 minutes. The result, which is the biggest in the
nation’s history, puts Iceland in third on the Group J table.
