Inter Milan striker Romelu Lukaku has faced racist abuse several times, especially during his time in Italy, and the latest of such “disgusting” behaviour happened on Tuesday night from some Juventus fans during a Coppa Italia match.
The Belgian star scored a penalty to
equalize the game but was met with monkey chants and gestures from a section
of the crowd. He was also shown a second yellow card for his celebration, which
he said was a response to the discrimination.
Lukaku has received support from many
people in the football world and beyond, who have condemned the racist
behaviour and called for action from the authorities.
His management agency Roc Nation
International Sports put out a statement asking for an apology and action taken
by authorities, as well as his club saying they “stand united against racism
and all forms of discrimination.”
France captain Kylian Mbappe who plays for
Paris Saint-Germain posted a message on his Instagram story saying, “2023 and
still the same problems. But we're not going to let it keep happening. All
against racism,”
Former Tennis champion Boris Becker also
shared Lukaku's post on his Instagram story, saying, “We will always support
you.”
The same sentiments were shared by Formula
One driver Lewis Hamilton, former Chelsea forward Didier Drogba, former Inter
Milan star Marco Materazzi as well as a plethora of other personalities.
Former AC Milan midfielder Clarence Seedorf
said, “The way to create the environment we want, we need to come together. I
invite you all for peaceful but strong action. Not only the black and coloured
players and former players but all who believe it’s enough! [..] Stand tall
and be proud.”
Lukaku has urged the Serie A administration to
take action "for real this time" and said that football should be
enjoyed by everyone. He also thanked his fans for their supportive messages.
